Discover a classical Islamic guide to knowledge, the purification of the soul, and the spiritual journey toward God.For centuries, the Islamic intellectual tradition has preserved profound works that explore the relationship between knowledge, character, and inner transformation. Among these works is Hidāyat al-Adhkiyāʾ ilā Ṭarīq al-Awliyāʾ (Guidance of the Intelligent Toward the Path of the Friends of God) by Shaykh Zayn al-Dīn al-Malībārī, a classical Sufi poem that has shaped generations of students and seekers across the Muslim world. This book offers a detailed textual study and intellectual commentary on Hidāyat al-Adhkiyāʾ, examining its vision of Islamic spirituality through language, philosophy, and the science of the soul.Moving beyond a simple translation, this study explores the deeper meanings behind the key concepts of the Sufi tradition: ʿilm – knowledge that transforms the human being
adab – the ethical foundation of spiritual growth
nafs and qalb – the struggle between desire and spiritual awareness
sharīʿah, ṭarīqah, and ḥaqīqah – the integrated dimensions of the Islamic path
tawbah, zuhd, tawakkul, and maḥabbah – the stations of purification and closeness to GodThrough careful analysis of Arabic terminology, Sufi psychology, and Islamic philosophy, this book reveals how a short classical text contains a complete framework for understanding human nature, spiritual discipline, and the pursuit of wisdom. It also examines the journey of Hidāyat al-Adhkiyāʾ through the Malay-Indonesian Islamic world, where Arabic scholarship, Jawi manuscripts, and traditional institutions such as pondok and pesantren preserved the teachings of classical Islamic civilization.Written for students, scholars, and thoughtful readers interested in: Sufism and Islamic mysticism
